Joel Seligman believes a high-performing organization's brand is its most valuable asset. His leadership experience includes strategy, marketing, public affairs, communications and organizational renewal in six comprehensive research universities with global reach: Cornell, Boston University, University of Chicago, University of New Hampshire, University of Maryland, and The University of Vermont. He was appointed Chief Communications and Marketing Officer at Vermont in 2021.

In addition to thirty years building and leading university-wide teams, Joel spent three years as vice president at Maguire Associates, the Boston-based higher education consultancy. As part of the firm's marketing practice, he worked closely with more than a dozen colleges and universities, leading projects and advising their executives and governing boards.

Throughout his career, Joel has been active in professional associations, serving as an award-winning faculty member for CASE. He has served on volunteer boards and practice groups within PRSA, AAU, and APLU. Joel is a PRSA-certified crisis communications manager. He has also been involved in social justice leadership development programs in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Joel earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Professional Studies degrees in communication at Cornell and a Doctor of Education degree at the University of Pennsylvania. His graduate research focused on the intersection of institutional strategy, brand and philanthropic engagement in universities. Joel is an active alumni volunteer at Cornell and Penn, where he has been involved in numerous fundraising campaigns.
