Sam Brown is an expert negotiator whose experience ranges from arms control and human rights negotiations with the successor states of the Former Soviet Union to work with local non-profits.
Much of Sam’s career has been in public service, including serving as Treasurer of the State of Colorado, Director of the ACTION Agency under President Carter, and Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe under President Clinton. He was the founding Executive Director of the Fair Labor Association, a collaboration of unions, human rights groups, and major apparel manufacturers.
For more than thirty years, when not in public service, Sam has been the General Partner of Centennial Partners, a real estate development and management firm that focuses on building high-quality affordable housing. In that capacity he has created unique public/private partnerships and negotiated complicated land acquisition, zoning, and financing arrangements.
Sam is an active volunteer leader, currently a Trustee and Treasurer of the Aspen Music Festival and School. He has served as Chairman of the Denver Film Festival and on the boards of public television station KBDI Denver, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation, the Rocky Mountain Environmental Defense Fund, and the federal Fair Campaign Practices Commission. He has also been on the boards of the Public Employees Retirement Association and the National Consumer Cooperative Bank.
Sam earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Redlands and a master’s degree from the Eagleton Institute at Rutgers University. He was Rockefeller Fellow at Harvard University’s Divinity School and a Fellow of the Institute of Politics at Harvard. Sam has been a guest on Meet the Press, Face the Nation, and other broadcasts. He has published in The Washington Monthly, New Republic, European Review, Public Welfare, and elsewhere.
